Reading
The MCPS reading program is a balanced literacy program that provides instruction in oral language development and the five components of reading- phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.

- Phonemic Awareness
- Identifies and generates rhyming words.
- Identifies words beginning with the same sound.
- Blends sounds together to make words.
- Phonics
- Recognizes and identifies all upper-and lower- case letters.
- Matches consonant sounds to appropriate letters.
- Fluency
- Reads accurately and with expression.
- Vocabulary
- Reads simple high-frequency words.
- Recognizes environmental print
- Comprehension
- Learns concepts about print
- -Tracks words left to right, top to bottom, with return sweep.
- -Identifies parts of a book.
- -Coordinates one-to-one matching of spoken words to printed words.
- Learns reading strategies used before, during and after reading text.
- -Makes predictions based on background knowledge
- -Makes connections to what he or she knows and what he or she reads.
- -Responds to reading through discussion or retellings.
- Reads beginning text.
